Fruit machines are fun

Whether playing fruit machines online, in a casino or just down the local pub, the most important thing to realise is that it’s just a bit of fun.

Although many machines have progressive jackpots and can make you a pretty penny instantly, it has to be realised by players that they are not a quick way to the rich house (if such a place exists). Fruit machines are a way to relax, unwind and generally while away a couple of hours.

I am not a player of the slots. There are many more strategic games out there for me, plus I have a personal grievance which stems back from when I first started going into pubs. I became a ‘fruit machine widow’. Now, this was not my girlfriend playing the machines but a mate. he would go missing for hours on the machines while I had to sit either by myself or with ‘Billy No Mates’.

If this was not bad enough there was a far worse scenario. In mid-conversation, my friend would leap up from the table with the immortal words ‘It’s going to drop’.

Not only did I then realise he (the slot-head, as we called him) was going to be out of the conversation loop for an hour but it also dawned on me he’d not been listening to my latest fascinating tales for the previous 60 minutes.

Instead, he’d been looking through me at the bright flashing lights of the machine across the room but had learned the art of nodding at the appropriate time!

That’s my experience of fruit machines and it has put me right off them. My unnamed friend may have something to say as a couple of years later I became a ‘quiz machine head’ who could spend hours on the Dave Lee Travis ‘Give Us A Break’ machine but surely that’s different – isn’t it?

So, if I’m playing a game in a casino or online it is unlikely to be a fruit machine. Roulette or blackjack is my game these days. I may be wrong, but I just feel the odds are slightly in my favour, especially blackjack where strategy can play an important role.
