The dangers of casino South Africa style

You’ve just won a mint on a roulette game and suddenly a gang busts in a robs the casino money and your money! It’s not a common occurrence but it did happen recently to a group of gamblers in South Africa.

The South African Herald takes up the story.

Witnesses described their terror during the brazen, early-morning Boardwalk Casino robbery – the first at this Port Elizabeth landmark since its establishment.

A still shaken Theresa Schultz, 19, who was playing poker when all hell broke loose after the armed robbers stormed into the casino, said: “People just started running. Someone said someone had a gun, so I ran too. I was heading towards the door when a woman told me to turn around as there were guys with guns out there. As I headed back towards the centre of the casino, the robbers came walking back towards the entrance. They were pointing their guns at people.

“They walked in a circle formation and the two tallest and thinnest guys were in the middle, holding the bags of money.”

A casino staff member, who did not want to be named, told of the frightening moment as the robbers brazenly walked about, demanding money from the cashiers. She had to take cover under the tables to avoid being harmed.

“I was working on the table when the guy who was playing sent his wife off to the cashiers,” she recalled.

“She came back and said there were men with guns there and they were robbing the place. I stood up to get a better look, and one of the robbers looked right at me. He held a silver revolver in his hand. I ducked under the table and lay on the ground. I could see people running all over the place. People were screaming and falling over. It all happened really quickly.

“These robbers didn’t even wear any masks.”

Another patron who was close to the epicentre of the robbery was Lorinda Marais, who said they were lucky no one had been injured.

“It happened so fast. I saw a thin guy being pulled through the bars of the cashier by another of the robbers. They had blue bags on the counter. We were lucky they didn’t shoot anyone.”

Ettinene Human said: “One had a 9mm pistol and was pointing it at people.

“One of the robbers jumped through the gap at the cashier’s office. He then opened the door to allow another of the robbers into the cashier’s cage.”
