Footballers are no stranger to the gambling world with David Bentley the latest in a line of luminaries, both past and present, to have admitted a penchant for having a wager, or two, or three…..
Of course, the Blackburn Rovers and England star was not the first footballer to enjoy a bet, Michael Owen is another - and he is even turning his hand to the horses - and I very much doubt he will be the last.
However, their exploits may have been well and truly put in the shade by Newcastle United chairman, Mike Ashley, who bet £480,000 in a single day at a casino in Mayfair.
And why not? If you have got it, flaunt it! That’s what I say. Ashley can certainly afford it as he is ranked as Britain’s 54th richest man, with an estimated personal fortune of £1.9 billion. With a bit of ’spare change’, Ashley purchased the Magpies last June for £135 million.
It appears he has a particular liking for the number 17 and reportedly won a big pay day in a betting combination on the roulette wheel with an advanced strategy known as ‘complete’. This involves placing different amounts of money on every number in the game, geared towards his lucky number.
And sure enough, the ball eventually landed in the right spot and gave him a win big enough to wish everyone a good day and cash in his chips.
According to witnesses, Ashley told the croupier, “thanks for the help and finishing my play,” and then left the casino.
Fair play, we all have some sort of strategy I am sure and just for the record my ‘lucky number’ is not too far away from Mr Ashley’s either. For some reason, and I can’t remember why, I like 20 and can not resist the urge just to have a cheeky bet - even when I am adopting an obviously different approach, such as backing low numbers.
Whether Mr Ashley, who is often sporting a Newcastle United shirt with the number 17 on, feels the same about the star who wears the shirt for the team, Alan Smith, is open to question.
But one thing that is for certain is that he may have to gamble on a few new players this summer as Kevin Keegan, who successfully steered the club away from danger this time around, is likely to want to beef up his squad for a better performance next season.
