As we continue our tour of the best casinos outside Las Vegas, we land in golfing and gaming paradise; the Algarve, Portugal.

Home to numerous world class golf courses, and now thanks to casinos like the Hotel Algarve, world class gambling, you can have the best of both worlds in this sun-soaked haven.

The Hotel Algarve Casino also lays claim to being the first Portuguese Hotel-Casino, but despite its stature as the ‘original’ it’s anything but old fashioned - a thorough refurbishment took place in 2003, bringing the casino and facilities bang up to date.

As you would expect from an area famed for its entertainment, you’ll find a bewildering degree of slot machines, gaming tables, including Blackjack, Poker, Baccarat, Roulette and Portuguese Dice, as well as evening concerts and shows. With over 300 slots and a host of tables there will be something to pique your interest. As with most European casinos, it can’t compete with the glitz and sheer size of a Vegas casino, but for those put off by the ‘showy’ nature of the Strip, an enjoyable afternoon or evening hitting the tables in the Hotel Algarve Casino should be right up your street.

The staff are friendly and courteous yet professional, the perfect blend to let you concentrate on your game. As you would expect from a Mediterranean casino, the atmosphere is relaxed and informal, but don’t let that lull you into a false sense of security. There’s still plenty of high class action and chip action on all the tables, and the casino floor is usually busy even during the week.

If things aren’t going your way in the casino, the nearby golf courses will help you refine your strategies as they offer peaceful, top class golfing bathed in sunshine. You’re also a stone’s throw away from the beach and the weather is practically guaranteed most months of the year (but don’t quote us on that!).

Also worth checking out is the Aladino Restaurant. Aside from the entertainment, the food is top class and the contemporary surroundings and ambience suit the rest of the hotel and casino services.

Whilst you may be used to the ‘open-all hours’ nature of casinos in Las Vegas, it should be noted that the Algarve Casino is not 24 hours and only opens in the afternoon. At least you’ll get chance to sample the local scenery and get a bit of sun on your back!

Hotel Algarve Casino is located in Praia da Rocha, Western Algarve and has definitely benefited from refurbished communal areas (restaurant, reception, salons, bar and business meeting rooms) to bring it into line with what you’d expect from a five-star leisure facility.
