The effects of alcohol on gambling exist, especially in areas where gambling is a strong source of the economy. The two factors work together to make the situation worse and the individual can actually form an alcohol abuse disorder as well as a gambling addiction. When the two disorders are working together, they usually disrupt the person’s wellbeing.
A gambler who drinks will focus more on alcohol while they’re playing, especially if they begin losing. As they drink more, they’ll also begin gambling more, taking greater risks and playing for longer periods of time than they would usually. It’s a vicious cycle that plays on both sides. In some cases the person will even begin craving gambling when they’re drinking away from the casino.
The problem that arises is when the addict begins to correlate the two addictions in their mind. For example, a gambler may have a winning streak while drinking whiskey and then decides that they need to drink whiskey every time they sit down to gamble. This will also make it difficult for the gambler to know when to stop or say no when it comes to alcohol. On the other side of the spectrum are those who feel they need to gamble when drinking. They might feel as though they can’t have fun unless they’re doing both at the same time.
When a person begins drinking and gambling, they slowly develop a tolerance to both addictions. They get excited or feel a thrill when they first begin combining the two activities. Later it becomes impossible to get back that original feeling, but the person doesn’t stop trying. They continue to bet more and drink more in the hopes of recapturing that original feeling.
Those who are worried that they might have a gambling problem combined with an alcohol problem should be careful when it comes to the amount of time they spend at the casino. They should place a limit such as an hour and stick to that limit by setting an alarm on their watch or cell phone. Whenever the alarm goes off, that means it’s time to leave, regardless of a winning or losing streak. They can also ask their friends to impose the limit on them and ensure they leave the casino before the situation escalates.
There are also some who may worry that their friends have a problem of this kind and want to know what they can do to help. The best thing for those friends to do is to watch the other person’s behavior and make note of any problems. They might notice that their friend starts drinking more the longer they spend in a casino, or decide to bet more money after having a few drinks. In situations like this, they need to do whatever possible to get their friend out of the situation and away from the casino and alcohol.
