Although the origins & history of blackjack are somewhat disputed it is common opinion that the game was created in France. Evidence supports theories that blackjack history emerged from French casinos in the early 16th centaury as a variant of other popular French casino games such as "French ferme" and "chemin de fer".
The game, originally known as "vingt-et-un" (twenty one) gathered popularity as it spread through the U.S and Europe during the early 18th century. The game of Twenty One evolved and became more commonly known as blackjack, apparently due to early U.S casinos offering extra bonuses for players dealt the jack of spades and the ace of spades.
The second world war saw a sharp decrease in the casino business but by the end of it the popularity of casinos were restored and blackjack was the preferred game second only to craps dice game. This was the trend until the late 1960s however, by the end of the 1970's, blackjack was celebrated as the most popular casino game and today it is Littlewoods Casino's most popular game.
